Heather and the Marlin Model 60

Heather and the Marlin Model 60

So I’ve wanted my GF to come shoot with me for as long as I’ve known her and yesterday she finally came.

The video shows her shooting my Charles Daly 1911 in .45 ACP. As you can tell she is a very inexperianced shooter but I think she did pretty well.

Heather taking a knee Curtis in the background

All together she shot 2 very different Marlin Model 60s, “Tisha” my AR15, and the 1911.

I’m looking forward to much more shooting with my GF this summer.

EDIT:

In case your wondering the AR15 you see in the background is Tisha. I have finally gotten around to completely break in the barrel and will be sighting in the next time I go shooting.

I have gathered enough data to do an actual review of the handguard, the stock and the bipod. Look for it in the next couple weeks. Followed soon after by a review of the barrel, scope, and green dot sight

So after about 6 months of researching parts, placing online orders, waiting for them to come in, and partial assembly. It is finally over.

She is up and running and shooting like a dream.

Here is a rundown of everything that went into her with links to where I got them (when available) if you feel like building your own.

As soon as the weather gets warm I will be posting a video review of each part as well as the rifle as a whole. I will do my best to be objective as possible.

Also I feel obligated to mention that RedXArms prices scared the crap out of me before I called them up and spoke with Neil (why so cheap?!).

He seems to know what hes doing and the parts I got are top notch. Shipping took longer than expected but after I got them they exceeded my expectations.

Feel free to sound off if you have a specific questions about any of the parts or assembly.

Just got back from Vegas and I figured I would post some pics from the gunshow. I wanted to find some interesting pieces or showcased displays to write about but nothing really caught my eye.  Maybe next time I guess.

Pics!!

So for the last six months or so I have been assembling an AR-15 from parts. What it would end up looking like existed only in my imagination. Until last Friday that is…

With the new ATI free-floating hanguard installed, the only thing left is the bolt carrier group. I’m at a crossraods between a chrome-plated or nitrided BCG.

Believe me you will be seeing much more of “Tisha” in the future.

A friend of mine taught me this and I figured I would share it with you. I have done this to my 1911 grips and let me tell you it completely changes the feel of the grip in your hand.

The rest of the gun needs work still but all in good time.

A closer view.

The grips shown are from Mako and have an extended magwell.

Also it is a good way to turn cheap plastic grips into custom textured grips.

Here is a quick tutorial:

It isnt very hard to do but keep in mind that if you aren’t comfortable taking a soldering iron to your Glock, it might be best to take it to a professional. This is something that can’t be undone.

EDIT: For some reason, UMG will not allow this video to be played as an embedded video. It will play for you on YouTube after the jump. (I think because it has a Guns ‘n Roses song in it.)

Here is the first part of repairing and customizing an old beat up Marlin/Glenfield 60 I bought from a guy on NodakOutdoors.

Here are the pics from when I got it:

It doesnt look too bad from the pictures that were posted in the ad…

This gun has seen better days.

But once I got it in my hands, it looked terrible. The finish was chipped, scratched, and rusting. There was a large hole where the front sight screw used to be. and the stock was cracked. not to mention the 25+ years of carbon that had built up inside the receiver. Not being one to pass up on an opportunity for experience I paid the man and took it home.

Once I got it open I also found out that it was missing one of the trigger guard screws and the feedthroat was broken. Whew!

After doing a quick cleaning, I ordered the parts I needed. In the mean time I filled the front sight hole with a ground down screw and cold blued it for the time being. I also started this blog. When the parts arrived, I made this video…

The fitting that I didn’t put into the video was mostly changing the angle of the top of the new part to match the existing cutout of the bolt.  And as I mentioned, removing some of the lifter. I also had to remove some of the lifter spring because it had some slack that was in the way of the new feedthroat. The next step for this gun is going to be refinishing the metal.  My dipping tank is empty right now but I just ordered some parkerizing solution…

…to be continued…

MSRP = $4800.00 but they are raffling them off at $25.00 a ticket.

You can’t see it in the picture bu the receiver is engraved with a beautiful South Dakota pheasant scene. The maker tells me that while it is functional, you wouldn’t want to shoot it as the plating covers everything. Inside and out. Any shot fired would blow out all of the gold from inside the barrel.

Beautiful craftmanship on this pistol. This picture does not do it justice.

This pistol is definitely unique. It has handcrafted grips so subtle you can hardly see them but holding it, it seems to melt into your grip. With a textured frame and slide serrations working the action is smooth as butter. I couldn’t try out the trigger but the owner tells me it breaks like glass. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it many times more but they just dont make them like they used to anymore. As before if you contact me I can put you in touch with the owner if your interested.

It is being held at The Ramkota Inn and will be Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am – 5:00pm (although this weekend being Super Bowl Sunday it might just be a one day show)

You’ll find me there manning the OutdoorBunker tables.

Hopefully I’ll remember my camera for you guys.
